About Us

Our Story

Our Shiras Winery; pronounced ("shy'-russ") refers to the subspecies of Moose in North America that reside in Colorado where Moose populations are thriving. Even though it is the smallest of the Moose in America, the mature bull weighs in at almost 1200 lbs, making it the largest big game animal in the state. Unlike the "Shiras" Moose, in comparison; we are one of the smallest wineries in Colorado in terms of cases produced. Our unique concept will allow us to create a larger variety of wines from select regions verses sourcing from one vineyard. This gives us the edge in that each wine is crafted as a true representation of both the region the grapes were grown and each varietal. We will change your mind about Colorado Wine!

Our Wines

Our vision brings the first working Winery and Tasting Room to an Urban setting in Historic Downtown Grand Junction. We don’t have a vineyard – our wines are hand-crafted, and bottled on-site in our craft brewery-style winery. Sourcing the best grapes we can find is the first and most important step in our wine making process. We create partnerships with small, family-owned vineyards primarily from the US west coast and Western Colorado by contracting acreage on their vineyards. When harvest time comes and depending on the final wine in mind, the grapes are crushed and de-stemmed in the fields; creating a grape must. The grapes; (must) are then brought back to our winery.

It is here that we begin the wine making process from full fermentation, barrel-aging, filtration, bottling and labeling. When we began this venture, we decided that it made the most sense to keep things small, efficient and manageable. Even as we grow, we keep things as small-scale as possible. Human-sized stainless steel tanks, small fermentation bins, and no-bigger-than-we-need crush equipment. This allows us to experiment and to craft our wines in small batches.

Tasting Room & Wine Shop

At Shiras Winery we focus on grape varietals throughout the West Coast regions of Colorado, California, Oregon and Washington. The wines in our tasting room are selected with purpose. We focus on boutique producers, smaller production wineries, natural and low-intervention wines, unique varietals and brands of the highest quality. Wine selections rotate often.

We offer over 30 wines by the glass, with a build your own wine flight from our menu. Enjoy your tasting with one of our Charcuterie Boards or Cheese Boards made fresh daily. Wines may also be purchased by the bottle.

Gourmet Marketplace

Once inside, you'll enjoy shopping at our Specialty Foods Marketplace. Since 2007, The Zesty Moose Brand has been crafted in small batches in our commercial kitchen onsite. Specializing in Seasoning Blends, BBQ Rubs and Sauces, Pasta, Olive Oils and Vinegars, Bulk Herbs and Spices; we offer the largest selection of Specialty Foods,Gifts and Local Art.
